Importance of Nutrient Timing

The importance of nutrient timing,

First off, what is nutrient timing ? Nutrient timing is basically the timing of when you ingest nutrients such as proteins, fats , carbs etc, throughout the day and around your workouts, people will strategically place there nutrition for optimal results.

Now this would all depend on the individuals goal/lifestyle.

Why is it important ? Nutrient timing will help with several factors in your training/fitness journey, heres a list of some benefits.

  • Improved Performance
  • Improved Recovery
  • Decrease in cortisol
  • Improved Sleep
  • Improved satiety
  • Increase in Lean Body Mass

Now If your goal is fatloss, in the overall of things its calories in vs calories burned throughout the day and keeping yourself in a calorie deficit that matters most, when you eat has only a slight impact towards fatloss, that being said eating at regular intervals can help with the overall goal by helping with recovery, training session performance and keeping hunger levels at bay and allowing us to feel more full throughout the day.

If your goal is to build muscle tissue then adding a slight calorie surplus, regular meal intervals and making sure your meals contain adequate protein, fats and carbs throughout the day to suit goal is best. It would be wise to be adding in a proper pre – workout meal (1-2 hours before) and post – workout meal (30min – 1 hour after) to allow for optimal recovery and increase muscle protein synthesis.

If your goal is performance/sport based then it is extremely important to time your meals regularly containing all nutrients and basing the bulk of your carbohydrates around your training sessions to allow for proper performance, adding in a fast digesting protein source post workout will help speed up recovery from those grueling sessions.

Whatever your goal is, its ideal to also base your eating patterns around your lifestlye, but just remember you cant run your car without fuel, same applies to your body with food.
