When you exercise/resistance train you put your body under a lot of stress, you begin to deplete energy stores and muscle tissue is broken down. After a workout session your glycogen stores have been used up and your body needs to replenish these for recovery/energy purposes.
This is why post workout nutrition is so important.
For optimal recovery, a post workout meal or snack is ideal within 1 hour after your workout – A combination of Protein and Carbohydrates.
Protein will aid with recovery of muscle tissue breakdown and enhance muscular growth.
Carbohydrates after a workout… will replenish your glycogen levels after training. Carbohydrates are your main and prefered energy source so you need to fuel your body back up.
